UNITY introduction: white boxing

Today we were introduced to Unity. Unity is a cross-platform game engine capable of making both 2D and 3D games. It offers a primary scripting API in C# for both the Unity editor in the form of plugins, and games themselves.

i've never used unity before and i was excited to try out a new programme such as unity! in class we were told that we were starting with the basics. we were given a pre-existing level design to work with during out lesson.

jasmine inserted a plane onto the stage (which would be the floor for our white boxing).

we then added the pre-existing level design to the plane that we previously downloaded.

we used this as our guide so that it was easier for us to work on our white boxing instead of not knowing where to place anything and feeling unsure the whole time. we wanted to make sure that we were doing the white boxing properly.

after we did that, we inserted a cube onto the stage and this would be the player. we then used the scaling tool to accurately scale the level map size.

we were told by our teacher to scale the level map size up so that two cubes would fit next to each other at the start of the level.

i did this by using the rotate and move tools to move the cube into position. we then used ctrl c and ctrl v to copy and paste the cube. i then moved the cubes next to the original cube so that they looked like buildings. you can see the process from the images below.

conclusion

i now know the basics of using Unity and i am very happy with the results. i had no problems with creating this and i now know how important it is to make my level design as detailed as i can. i can now attempt to do so in the future as now i feel more confident with making simple shapes that i can later learn how to make more complex. learning this has helped me and i will continue to use it to create and build my level design as it is a vital part of my assignment.
